Marriage Symbol in a Genogram

A marriage is a solid line that drops down from each partner and joins them horizontally. By convention the male partner is on the left. Write the marriage year on the line, for example "m. 1995", and hang the couple’s children from it.

  • Living together

What it means

  • A solid line means married; a dashed line means living together without being married.
  • Same-sex couples are drawn with exactly the same partner line.
  • A person with several marriages gets one partner line per marriage, in order.

When to use it

  • Every married couple in the genogram, current or past.

Common mistakes

  • Connecting children to one parent instead of to the partner line.
  • Using a dashed line for a married couple.
