Divorce Symbol in a Genogram

In a genogram, divorce is shown by two short slashes across the line that joins the couple. One slash means separated; two slashes mean divorced. Write the year next to the slashes, for example "d. 2012".

  • Marriage

What it means

  • The marriage line stays in place: the couple and their children are still connected on the diagram.
  • The slashes sit on the horizontal part of the partner line, between the two partners.
  • If either partner remarries, the new marriage is a separate partner line, usually drawn to the other side.

When to use it

  • Any couple that legally divorced, whether or not they had children.
  • Blended families, to show which children came from which marriage.

Common mistakes

  • Erasing the marriage line. The children of the marriage then look like they have no parents.
  • Using one slash for divorce. One slash is separation.
  • Forgetting the year, which is often what the assignment asks you to discuss.
